Valley of Geysers — 10 days

The Kamchatka geyser field was found in 1941 by Tatyana Ustinova, a hydrologist who followed a warm tributary of the Shumnaya upstream until it produced a column of steam. It is one of five large geyser fields on earth. A landslide in 2007 dammed the river and drowned part of the valley floor; the lake has since drained, and most of the vents have returned.

We fly in from Yelizovo, spend three nights at Uzon and two on the Zhupanova, then walk out over the pass to the coast if conditions allow.

Klyuchevskaya Group — 14 days

Thirteen volcanoes in one massif, including Klyuchevskaya Sopka at 4,754 metres — the highest active volcano in the northern hemisphere. Tolbachik erupted through 2012 and 2013 and left fields of fresh lava that are still warm underfoot in places.

This is the most demanding trip we run. Expect six to nine hours of walking a day at altitude, on ash and scoria, carrying your own kit between camps.

Eastern Coast & Bears — 8 days

Kurile Lake holds the largest sockeye salmon spawning ground in Eurasia, and in August the bears concentrate at the outflow. Observation is from platforms and from boats, with a ranger present at all times. Groups here are capped at eight.
